Cheltenham v York City: York chief confident that the tide will turn

The Minstermen travel to Cheltenham Town sitting just one place and one point above the League Two relegation zone.

Just one win all season – the lowest tally in the basement – is behind York’s lowly position, but Wilcox is adamant that the results will come.

“Without doubt, we can get up the league,” said the York manager, whose three games in charge have yielded two draws and a defeat.

“This is a good group and there are good characters here. Nine draws tells you that we are not far away and I am convinced the wins will soon start coming.”

Wilcox, after assessing the squad he inherited from Nigel Worthington, has started to bring in new faces with goalkeeper Alex Cisak’s arrival from Burnley last week being followed by the loan capture of Deon Burton from Scunthorpe United.

The 38-year-old forward played a big part in helping Wilcox’s Iron side to promotion last season and he could go straight into the side to face Cheltenham today.

Wilcox added: “Our 1-1 draw with Mansfield last week wasn’t as good a performance as at Morecambe the previous Tuesday.

“But there was plenty to build on against a team who have a direct style.

“I am a positive manager and I will be looking for us to be positive at Cheltenham.”

Michael Ingham is back in the squad after missing the Mansfield game through a thigh injury but Jake Hyde and Wes Fletcher may miss out again.

Wilcox explained: “I won’t gamble with either. We have just Saturday games for the next month so there is no point throwing anyone in who isn’t quite ready.”
