Chesterfield 2 York 2: Post enables Minstermen to hang on for share of points

YORK City threw away a two-goal lead but held on to claim a point at promotion favourites Chesterfield.

The Minstermen surprised their hosts with goals from Luke O’Neill and Ryan Jarvis, but were pegged back by efforts from Armand Gnanduillet and substitute Jay O’Shea during the last half-hour.

Chesterfield should have taken a 25th-minute lead, but former Ivory Coast Under-20 international Gnanduillet headed over from six yards.

The Minstermen’s response was swift with Ryan Brobbel forcing home goalkeeper Tommy Lee into a fine save from 25 yards.

On-loan Burnley right-back O’Neill, who was switched to midfield for the night, opened the scoring for the visitors on 34 minutes.

After collecting a pass from Josh Carson, O’Neill rifled a low shot into Lee’s bottom right-hand corner from 30 yards.

The Minstermen doubled their lead on the hour when Jarvis headed in from Josh Carson’s corner.

But Chesterfield reduced the deficit within three minutes after Lewis Montrose shoved over former Huddersfield winger Gary Roberts in the penalty box.

Gnanduillet made no mistake from the spot, firing powerfully to Michael Ingham’s left.

Substitute O’Shea then levelled matters on 76 minutes, applying the finishing touch to a far-post cross by Roberts from the left.

Chesterfield might have gone on to win the match, but Gnanduillet headed against an upright and York held on.
