Flynn staying in new role, Worthington in his old one

DONCASTER ROVERS chairman John Ryan hopes to have Brian Flynn’s replacement as manager in place within “a couple of weeks”.

The League One title winners yesterday confirmed that the 57-year-old Welshman would become director of football at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Paul Dickov and Terry Butcher have both been linked with the vacancy, which was created on the same day that York City confirmed Nigel Worthington would be remaining in place at Bootham Crescent after leading the club to safety in League Two.

On the search for Flynn’s successor, Rovers chairman Ryan said: “We would hope that the process will take a couple of weeks.

“Considering we have just won promotion, we would anticipate receiving some good enquiries. Providing that happens, we can then make the right decision.”

Flynn, who will play a part in the search for a new manager, stepped in to take charge of Doncaster in January following the departure of Dean Saunders to Wolverhampton Wanderers. He had previously been on the scouting staff at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Ryan added: “Brian loves developing and recruiting young players and we are pleased to be able to accommodate that wish.

“He will be involved heavily in the future as director of football is a senior position.

“He did a fantastic job. He will always be a legend in Doncaster for achieving what he did by leading us to the League One championship. That’s not bad for a manager only in the job for three to four months.

“I honestly cannot speak highly enough of the job Brian has done.”

Meanwhile, York director Sophie Hicks has spoken of the club’s delight at Worthington agreeing to stay on as manager.

The former Northern Ireland manager signed a short-term deal until the end of the season in early March before leading the Minstermen to safety.

Victory at Dagenham & Redbridge a week ago finally banished any fears that York, who as recently as Good Friday had been propping up the entire Football League, would be relegated back to the Conference.

Talks between the club’s board and Worthington took place in the wake of that final-day triumph. All manner of topics were discussed, including what playing budget will be available next season, before agreement was reached.

As a result, Worthington signed a rolling contract to remain at the helm.

Director Sophie Hicks said: “We are all thrilled at the news that Nigel has agreed to stay on as our manager.

“There was only one man that we wanted to lead York City next season and we have now got him. Nigel has done an exceptional job and we believe he is the right person to take us forward as a club.

“His influence was obvious in those final 10 games of the season. He did an exceptional job and we are very excited to have Nigel in place. It represents a terrific end to what has been a great week for York City.”

Steve Torpey has been promoted to assistant manager by Worthington.
