Have your say: Flynn and Evans aim to be celebrating on tense final day

South Yorkshire duo Doncaster Rovers and Rotherham United will enter the final day of the season needing just a solitary point to clinch promotion.

Brian Flynn’s Rovers would have secured a swift return to the Championship if they had beaten Notts County at home on Saturday.

But a 1-0 defeat at the Keepmoat Stadium means Rovers need to avoid defeat at third-placed Brentford to win promotion alongside Bournemouth.

It is a similar scenario in League Two, where Rotherham’s healthy goal difference means just a point against struggling Aldershot on Saturday would probably be enough to see off the challenge of Cheltenham Town.

With Sheffield United and Bradford City having already booked play-off spots in their respective divisions and York City heading into their final game with their Football League safety still to be decided, Saturday is destined to be a dramatic finale to the League One and League Two regular season.

Doncaster manager Flynn described his side’s first-half performance as the worst 45 minutes in his time as manager.

Rovers simply froze in front of a packed Keepmoat Stadium crowd and, despite an improved second-half, Joss Labadie’s 14th-minute strike was enough to earn County a surprise win.

Flynn knows their season rests on a ‘winner-takes-all’ game at Brentford on Saturday. Victory for either side will see them promoted, and push the losers into the play-offs, although a draw would be sufficient for Doncaster.

“We will start again on Monday morning and we will be ready for Brentford,” said Flynn. “Our away form has been blistering and we will go down there with confidence.

“When I took over, if someone had offered me the position of winning our last game to go up I’d have taken it without doubt.

“Saturday was a big occasion with a great crowd but, unfortunately, it didn’t happen. Normally in the first 10 minutes of the game, our tempo is high and we play in the opposition’s half and we just didn’t do that.

“The second half was better but it wasn’t an ideal end to the season here at the Keepmoat.

“In the second half, their goalkeeper did really well, we have come up against goalkeepers who are doing well recently.

“I don’t know if we deserved a draw, but we have to take it. This is how it is, we go to Brentford and we need a result.

“It shouldn’t be difficult to pick the players up, they are well-disciplined, well-organised and have good character. It’s turned into a 90-minute season.”

In League Two, Rotherham took a huge step towards securing promotion as Kieran Agard’s second-half goal saw the Millers win 1-0 at Plymouth Argyle.

It sets up a final day visit from Aldershot at a packed New York Stadium as Steve Evans’s side look to confirm promotion.

“It was another hard-fought battle wasn’t it?” said Evans.

At the other end of the table, York City need a point from their final-day trip to Dagenham and Redbridge to ensure League Two football next season.

The Minstermen beat Southend 2-1 on Saturday, thanks to goals from Adam Reed and Matty Blair, and are two points above second-from-bottom AFC Wimbledon.
