Off-key York get quick chance for revenge

Teams can cope with having one or two players off form but when 10 are below par on the same day the outcome is inevitable.

York were simply dreadful with only Danny Kearns anywhere near his best and there will have to be vast improvements if the Minstermen are to make any progress when the teams meet again at Wimbledon tonight in their first round FA Cup replay.

“We started poorly and never got any better. We were outplayed all over the pitch, didn’t create any chances and got what we deserved,” said Mills, who would have hoped for a better way of celebrating his 51st birthday.

“Danny gave it a little bit of something in midfield but apart from him we didn’t have anyone anywhere near their best,” added Mills.

York have only two home wins in 10 league and cup games, a stark contrast to their super away record of only two defeats in the last 25 games.

York, who did not have a decent effort on target, dropped behind on 54 minutes when Michael Ingham’s poor clearance was headed back down the middle by Yado Mambo for Byron Harrison to beat Ingham to the ball before rolling it into the empty net.

Ingham denied Charlie Strutton before Stacy Long (80 minutes) cracked a low 20-yard shot into Ingham’s right-hand corner. Jack Midson’s 83rd-minute penalty after Chris Smith had fouled Strutton added to York’s gloom.
