Mills confident York can bounce back

The Minstermen travel to second-placed Port Vale, a team who have lost just once on home soil all season.

York, however, have also suffered just one reverse on the road this term to leave Mills in hopeful mood ahead of the trip to Vale Park.

He said: “Port Vale have had a good start to the season and are in a decent position. It is a difficult place to go. But we have shown on several occasions this season that we can do well, no matter where we play. So we will go there in confident mood.”

City will be chasing their first win in six League and Cup outings today as they look to bounce back from two defeats in three days against AFC Wimbledon.

The first of those two reverses came a week ago as AFC inflicted a 3-0 defeat on York at Bootham Crescent in the league. The second followed on Monday night in the FA Cup as Scott Kerr was sent off in a 4-3 reverse to ensure the midfielder misses today’s trip to the Potteries.

Mills was disappointed to go out of the Cup at the first hurdle but he saw enough to suggest the Minstermen have got what was a poor performance against Wimbledon in the league out of their system.

He said: “Monday night was a big improvement on a couple of days earlier at home to Wimbledon, when I felt we deserved to lose.

“There are not many times when we haven’t performed this season but last weekend was one of them. The pleasing thing was how we reacted and I didn’t feel we deserved to lose in the Cup.

“We could have scored four of five goals in that first half had we taken our chances. We were also a bit unfortunate with some of the goals Wimbledon scored. But, sometimes, these things just happen and we have to move on and keep what has been a decent run going in the league.”

York’s hopes of inflicting only a second home defeat of the season on Vale will be boosted by Micky Adams being denied the services of League Two ‘October Player of the Month’ contender Ashley Vincent, who is suspended after collecting his fifth booking of the season in midweek.
