Mills tasks York with making a bright start

WITH a first point safely squirrelled away, York City today travel to one of League Two’s perennial strugglers looking to make it third time lucky in their pursuit of a first League victory in eight years.

However, despite Barnet having gone close to being relegated in each of the last four seasons, manager Gary Mills insists his Minstermen side will have to be at their best to prevail at Underhill.

Mills said: “It is very early in the season so every team will still be feeling confident, no matter what has gone on in recent years.

“Everyone also feels fresh at this stage so Barnet will be looking forward to the game as much as us.

“Only three teams have claimed maximum points from the opening two games and that shows how competitive League Two is going to be.”

York’s first point of the season was earned because Mills’s men twice came from behind at Morecambe in midweek as a thrilling encounter ended in a 2-2 draw.

Following on from the opening-day defeat at home to Wycombe Wanderers, Mills admits it was an important psychological boost to return from the seaside with something to show for their endeavours.

He added: “We showed good character by coming from behind twice but, as manager, I would like to get our noses in front and keep that clean sheet that has so far proved elusive.

“I thought we played well and had good spells in the game. It was great for us all to get that first point, especially after losing on the opening day when I thought the 3-1 scoreline was harsh.”

York travelled south yesterday ahead of today’s game at Underhill.

The manager added: “We went overnight on long trips last season in the Conference and did things right.

“So, in that respect, nothing will change and Barnet is the first of those long trips this time.

“There are a lot of teams based in the south so it is important that we give ourselves the best preparation.”

York’s attempts to bring in a striker have been thwarted but Mills will continue his search ahead of the transfer window closing next week.

Jamie Reed and Oli Johnson are both injured, leaving York short of attacking options.

The Minstermen last won at Barnet in 1994.
