Northampton Town 0 York City 2: Minstermen must build on hat-trick of victories

Ryan Bowman’s 68th-minute opener and Wes Fletcher’s penalty strike two minutes later deservedly sealed the points for the on-song Minstermen at Sixfields Stadium.

Victory for the visitors was their second this season against the League Two basement boys.

Worthington, whose side are sitting healthily in 14th position after nine points from a possible nine, beamed: “That win was thoroughly deserved.

“Our performance levels have been very consistent this season, even though sometimes we haven’t always got what we deserved. But, in the last three matches, we’ve fully deserved three points in every game.

“It’s a case of keeping that mentality there and the strength within the group so we keep performing like that.

“There’s a couple of things I ask for from the players and that’s honesty and that they compete. We did that really well.

“We knew Northampton would fight and scrap for every ball on the pitch – and we had to match them. We got the all-important second goal and got the win we deserved but we’ve got to build on that now.”

Bowman headed home from Josh Carson’s cross for the opener not long after the hour-mark for his sixth goal of the season.

Then Kevin Amankwaah was adjudged to have felled Michael Coulson in the area and Fletcher slotted home the spot-kick for his third goal in two games and his 11th of the season.

But despite three successive victories, Worthington was keen to play down expectations of a top half finish this term.

“There’s nothing to get excited about, there’s a hell of a long way to go,” stressed Worthingon.

“We’re 14th in the table, good, and we want to push on. But to get there we know there’s a lot of hard work to go in.”
