Wilcox the strongest candidate

Russ Wilcox remains the strong favourite to be named as the new manager of York City and could be unveiled today.

The 50-year-old was controversially dismissed by Scunthorpe United just seven days ago – paying the price for a run of just two wins in 11 League One games following the Iron’s promotion last term.

Wilcox was named as the League Two Manager of the Year last term after presiding over a 28-match run without defeat after taking over from Brian Laws,

It represented a record sequence for a manager’s first spell in charge.

But he had come under increasing pressure at Iron after losing six games out of seven in all competitions.
