Worthington looking to add cutting edge to York’s defensive strengths

The Minstermen head into this afternoon’s encounter at the Pirelli Stadium on the back of successive clean sheets registered in Roses encounters with Rochdale and Morecambe, with Worthington having been delighted with their defensive resolve of late.

Especially given some considerable back-five disruption with last season’s three mainstays, goalkeeper Michael Ingham and defenders Chris Smith and Dan Parslow all being in the treatment room for varying spells.

In their absence, the likes of club stalwart David McGurk and loan signings Keith Lowe and Aaron McCarey are stepping up to the plate and Worthington wants that to continue.

Worthington, who has got the response – at least defensively – he was looking for in the wake of withering criticism of his side after their FA Cup exit to Bristol Rovers last month, is now seeking a little bit more attacking sharpness.

“We’ve worked hard to get the clean sheets, but not scored any goals.

“We need the two to come together if we can to get us the results to move us forward,” said Worthington.

“Ideally, when you don’t concede, you want to score goals at the same time.

“Obviously, we’ve a few out at the back and the opportunity is there for others to come in and do their jobs. It’s up to the individuals to stake their claim where they can.”

After an early autumnal blip, Burton – beaten in the play-off semi-finals by Bradford last season – are starting to show glimpses of their form of 2012-13 and they have won seven of their last 10 matches in all competitions, last just once.

Worthington said: “They are a very strong side who have invested.

“But we have no fears and if we go there and play how we can play and keep a clean sheet, that can give us a little platform to build.”
