Worthington looks to get started after Wycombe get quickly out of the blocks

But for a stroke of luck here and a favourable bounce there, York City and Wycombe Wanderers might have been playing two divisions apart this season.

The Minstermen came within a single goal of progressing to the League Two play-off final last season as their remarkable run after Christmas transformed them from a side looking over their shoulders at the bottom three into promotion hopefuls.

Wycombe, by contrast, needed a 3-0 win at Torquay on the final day of the season, allied with a defeat for Bristol Rovers, to ensure they avoided falling through the trapdoor into non-League football.

As it is, they both remained League Two clubs and it is Wycombe who have emerged quickest from the summer lay-off with a bright start to the new term.

They arrive at Bootham Crescent boasting a record of three wins from four games and sitting fifth in the table.

York have yet get started, with all four of their games resulting in a draw.

“They have had a very good start and we won’t be under-estimating them,” said York chief Nigel Worthington, whose side defeated Wycombe 2-0 back in March, en route to the play-offs.

“We know what we are up against and, if we don’t do our jobs, individually and collectively, we will be in for a shock.”

Worthington has said he thinks it unlikely he will be adding to his squad with any permanent transfers before the window closes on Monday night.
