Worthington remains calm despite poor run

YORK CITY may be ignominiously – and worryingly – languishing in the bottom two of football’s basement after four straight defeats, but Nigel Worthington is confident an upturn won’t be too long in coming.

Their latest loss arrived in last weekend’s 2-1 home reverse to Mansfield, but despite the Minstermen’s second successive setback at Bootham Crescent, boss Worthington was at least consoled in his side’s performance.

He felt it raised the bar significantly from the previous week’s 2-0 loss to AFC Wimbledon, in which Worthington was severely critical of his side’s efforts – and feels if City, without a win since the opening day, continue in the same vein and stick together, their rewards will arrive.

Worthington, whose recent form is the polar opposite to today’s opponents Wycombe, seeking their fifth straight win, said: “The performance last week was very good with five or six new faces in and to be fair, they all performed very well.

“For me, it’s a case of same again, but just with a different result if we can.

“We’re working hard and that’s the key to turning the corner.

“The spirit is also good and it’s about having self-belief and doing what we’re good at and making sure we eliminate minor mistakes because they are costing us at the minute.

“It hurts to lose games, but it’s a fact of life in football. We’ve just got to keep our heads down and keep working away.”

Acknowledging the extent of today’s task at Adams Park, where York lost 4-0 last term, Worthington added: “They (Wycombe) have had a great start to the season, no doubt that and it’s going to be tough.

“But we’ve got to believe in what we do and concentrate on causing them problems.”

Veteran striker Richard Cresswell sits out tomorrow’s game, serving the first game of a three-match ban after receiving his marching orders in the defeat against the Stags.

But better news sees fellow targetman Ryan Bowman return following a three-game suspension and his availability should soften the blow of Cresswell’s absence.

Wycombe see Josh Scowen and Jon-Paul Pittman return, but Paris Cowan-Hall (knee) is out as he recovers from a strained medial ligament.
