York City 0 Doncaster Rovers 1: Forrester’s late strike breaks York’s resolve

Former Brentford striker Forrester bagged his second goal in as many games to help Rovers edge into the second round of the Cup after an entertaining tie at Bootham Crescent.

Second-half substitute Forrester – who scored in Saturday’s 3-0 win at Yeovil – finished smartly for Rovers just when it looked as if their League Two hosts were going to force extra-time.

It was a tough result to swallow for Nigel Worthington’s bold side who had given as good as they got against their League One visitors.

As early as the first minute York’s Anthony Straker forced a save out of Jed Steer, the Aston Villa loanee.

At the other end Kyle Bennett had a shot saved by goalkeeper Jason Mooney, before Tom Platt blasted wide of the left post with a powerful 25-yard volley.

York striker Michael Coulson shot wide four minutes after the break, and Theo Robinson was denied by Mooney as Rovers threatened on the counter-attack.

But it was Forrester who won it at the finish with a clinical strike to bring a smile to the face of Rovers’ manager Paul Dickov.
