York City 0 Shrewsbury Town 1: New boss Wilcox aware of Minstermen’s needs

Only fellow strugglers Hartlepool have scored fewer goals than the 11 the second-bottom Minstermen have mustered in League Two this term.

Wilcox was not helped by Ryan Jarvis’s 63rd-minute red card – York’s second in as many matches – but goalkeeper Michael Ingham had also kept his side in the game with fine reflex saves from Andy Mangan and Nathaniel Knight-Percival before James Collins settled matters late on.

Afterwards, former Scunthorpe boss Wilcox said: “It’s important to pass the ball because I think League Two has changed.

“A lot of teams get the ball on the floor like Shrewsbury.

“You have to try and keep supporters happy because they pay good money and we’ve got to entertain more.

“I know there is quality in this group of players but it’s impossible to change mindsets in a few days.

“It might take time and a couple of new players.”

Ingham reacted smartly to smother an early Mangan chance following a mix-up between Keith Lowe and Marvin McCoy.

Michael Coulson tested Shrewsbury’s goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler twice early in the second half before the crucial moment arrived when Jarvis was dismissed after a dangerous, mis-timed tackle on the impressive Knight-Percival close to the halfway line.

The long-serving Ingham went on to parry away Knight-Percival’s header before he was eventually beaten in the 86th minute when Collins, preying four yards from goal, got a decisive touch on Jordan Clark’s edge-of-the-box drive.

Wycombe claimed an outright lead at the top of League Two thanks to a win over AFC Wimbledon and Burton’s home loss to Morecambe.

Josh Scowen and Sam Wood scored in the second half as the Chairboys enjoyed a routine 2-0 victory against the Wombles at Adams Park. Burton, meanwhile, were beaten by the same scoreline when hosting Morecambe at Pirelli Stadium, with Kevin Ellison and Alex Kenyon scoring for the Shrimps.

That allowed Bury to move up to second thanks to a 3-0 defeat of Portsmouth at Gigg Lane, where Danny Mayor, Ryan Lowe and Danny Rose hit the target.
