York City 2 Grimsby Town 1: Owls keeping watch as wonder strike from Walker rallies York

Clubs are beginning to take note of Jason Walker, York City’s leading scorer, whose spectacular equalising goal provided the spark for a fine comeback win over the Mariners in one of the best matches seen at Bootham Crescent for many a year.

Sheffield Wednesday had a scout watching Walker for the third successive match and he must have been impressed with the striker’s display, Walker’s goal being a replica of that scored by Wayne Rooney, repeated every week on BBC’s Match of The Day opening sequence.

“Jason is in great form and has scored some great goals. I am not surprised clubs are watching him. I would rate him in the £1m class,” said York manager Gary Mills.

The biggest crowd of the season saw another fine display by York, whose flowing pass and move style of attacking football has not been bettered in the five decades that this observer has covered the Minstermen.

The Minstermen recovered from the setback of conceding a goal in the fourth minute through Craig Disley’s header, which went over goalkeeper Michael Ingham’s head, to equalise after 34 minutes.

Walker, with his back to goal, jumping to score with an overhead shot.

Both teams had their chances. Grimsby, urged on by a big following, playing their part in an incident-packed thriller which was settled four minutes from time when Ashley Chambers scored with a low cross shot after being set up by Walker and Adriano Moke.
