York City: Take out anger on me, not board: Wilcox tells fans

Tom Soares’ early strike ensured a bad night all around for relegation-haunted York, with struggling rivals Hartlepool United, Tranmere Rovers and Carlisle United all winning.

The upshot is that York are level on points with Cheltenham, who currently occupying the second relegation position with Hartlepool, who have won their past two matches.

Fans vented their spleen in the direction of chairman Jason McGill at the final whistle last night and some called on the board to sack Wilcox, whose York side have won just once in their past six outings and twice in 14 League Two matches so far in 2015.

On the criticism, Wilcox, whose side now face back-to-back away trips to Accrington and Mansfield, said: “I can understand the fans’ frustration, but I’d say it’s not helpful in the situation we are in – that’s for certain.

“We’ve not had enough home wins or scored enough goals this season and we can’t change that, but everybody needs to get behind the club and stick together.

“It’s totally wrong if anybody is venting their anger at the board. They have done an incredible job since taking over the club.

“Any anger should be directed at me. I pick the team and the tactics, so have a go at me because I have broad shoulders.”
