GOALS were at a premium for the vast majority of White Rose sides at the weekend - which most definitely was not a vintage one, certainly in comparison to the previous Saturday.

But there were highlights nevertheless, with Huddersfield Town posting up a solid home win over Wolves and Barnsley also securing the derby spoils against Doncaster Rovers to continue their new year rise.

There was respite too for Sheffield United, while a much-changed Hull side dug in to chisel out a fine 0-0 FA Cup with holders Arsenal - and earn themselves a replay back in East Yorkshire in the process.

Here’s the Yorkshire Post team of the week ...

The FA Cup often conjures up unlikely heroes and the Bosnia and Herzegovina-born custodian most definitely was one at the Emirates - watched on by his daughter.

Terrific last line of defence and did more than anyone to heroically earn the Tigers a second bite of the cherry. Fine saves to deny Theo Walcott, Danny Welbeck, Alexis Sanchez and Joel Campbell.

2: Greg Halford (Rotherham United).

A season to forget for the much-travelled utility man, who was persona non grata after being frozen out at Rotherham by Neil Redfearn. But the arrival of Neil Warnock has handed him a lifeline and produced a solid performance, albeit in a losing cause, at Burnley in his first full start for the Millers since the end of August.

3: James Husband (Huddersfield Town).

Produced an accomplished display as part of a Town side who deservedly took the scalp of Wolves. The Boro loanee is settling in nicely in West Yorkshire and provided an assist for Nahki Wells’s winner following some buccaneering offensive play.

4: Alfie Mawson (Barnsley).

Unflappable in the derby cauldron at Oakwell, with Marc Roberts not too far behind him. Given Kevin Long’s recent departure, Mawson is a bit of a ‘senior partner’ in the heart of the Reds rearguard and didn’t let anyone down at the weekend.

5: Harry Maguire (Hull City).

It could easily have been fellow defenders Alex Bruce or Curtis Davies in the side - with Giuseppe Bellusci also delivering another decent display for Leeds at Watford. But Maguire gets the nod following another strong and assertive performance. He has come on a ton for Hull this term.

6: Philip Billing (Huddersfield Town).

After seeing his name in lights following his wonder goal at the City Ground, the big Danish talent - who many are tipping to have a very bright future in the corridors of power at the John Smith’s Stadium - backed up impressively, which is often the trick for a young player.

7: Adam Hammill (Barnsley).

Has got his mojo back and what a renaissance he is enjoying back at Oakwell. Was head and shoulders above anyone else on the pitch in the first half on Saturday, when he toyed with the Doncaster defence at times and his sumptuous display rightly earned him the man-of-the-match honours.

8: Louis Reed (Sheffield United).

The engine-room grafter has returned to the starting line-up of late and has fully vindicated Nigel Adkins in the process. Diligent, busy and probing for the Blades at the weekend.

One of several Town players who are clearly relishing life under David Wagner, with the responsibility of being the club’s main man up front also sitting well upon his shoulders. The game-breaker at the weekend, against a side who were linked with him in the January transfer window.

10: Billy Sharp (Sheffield United).

It is fair to say that without Sharp’s goal, then the Blades’ play-off push would be over or at best in serious jeopardy.

He has stepped up the plate on numerous occasions and again showed his predatory instincts to down Port Vale at the weekend. Now an ‘older head’ at 30, Sharp is very much cast in the role of striking talisman. Has now hit 15 goals and how the Blades will need him to continue to fire for the rest of the season if their campaign is not to fade out.

11: Nick Powell (Hull City).

On his first start for a whopping 544 days - at the Emirates of all places - the Manchester United loanee showed his prowess with some neat touches and did enough to suggest that he could play a key role during the run-in for Hull.

Manager: Paul Heckingbottom.

Plus ca change is serving Barnsley well, with Heckingbottom having taken on the baton left by Lee Johnson and clearly showing the benefits of continuity - with the Royston man in an exceedingly strong position in terms of being handed the permanent reigns at Oakwell.

Made a couple of timely changes in the second half just when the game was starting to slip away from the Reds against Rovers - and most Oakwell punters will be of the view that he definitely deserves a shot in terms of landing the full-time gig.
