Future looks bright for returning Ennis

Jessica Ennis believes her impressive comeback from injury in Manchester bodes well for the rest of the season.

The world and European heptathlon champion, competing for the first time since an ankle tendon injury sustained in February, clocked 12.88 seconds for the 100m hurdles in wet and windy conditions at the Great City Games on Sunday.

The 25-year-old, whose first heptathlon of the year is coming up in Gotzis, Austria, at the end of the month, finished third on the raised track on Deansgate in a field of hurdles specialists.

Her American-born Great Britain team-mate Tiffany Ofili was given fourth also in 12.88secs, with America’s Danielle Carruthers winning in 12.73s.

“Coming into this I just didn’t really know where I was, so to run 12.88 shows that I’m in good shape,” said Ennis, who was less impressed with her 17.40s to finish second in the 150m.

“One massive positive to take from the day is that my ankle feels good. It’s a relief to be back in competition. To get into shape so quickly is quite promising.”
