Champion Romano heads strong field in Carris Trophy at Fulford

Romano has been on top form since his play-off victory in the English Under-18 boys’ open championship and has won the French boys’ title and the Italian amateur.

Now, as he targets a Carris double, he heads a strong international challenge. A total of 18 countries will be represented in the championship, with a large entry from English boys seeking to bring home this much sought-after title.

Among them are the six players who make up England’s two teams in the Nations Cup event. The England Golf boys’ order of merit leader Harrison Arnold (Castle Royle) is teamed with Barclay Brown (Hallamshire) and Enrique Dimayuga (Walton Heath). Team two comprises Matthew Freeman (Notts), Tom Gregory (Stoke Park) and Ben Pierleoni (Berkhamsted).

The Nations Cup is played over the first 36 holes of the championship with the best two scores from three counting in each round.

Brown is part of a strong contingent from Yorkshire that also includes the county boys’ champion Ben Schmidt (Rotherham), Charlie Daughtrey (Rotherham), Michael Hay (Middlesbrough), Callum Macfie (Lindrick) and Jack Maxey (Hornsea).

Fulford’s wonderful heathland and woodland course will be a fine test for the boys as it has been for some of the world’s finest players over the years.

It hosted 23 consecutive European Tour events and the winners included an array of Ryder Cup players and major winners. It has also hosted top amateur events such as the European women’s team championship and this year’s inaugural British Under-16 girls’ championship.

The 72-hole championship will be played from Tuesday to Friday, July 24-27.

After 36 holes the field will be cut to the top 60 players and ties.
