Doncaster trio feed off support to put themselves in great position after first round of Junior Champion Club event

The competition sees the best two Stableford scores count in each round and they amassed 80 (Longworth 41, Newman 39 and Ciullo 37) to be four back.

It was a show which impressed their sizeable crowd of supporters.

“The club has never been to this before and a lot of people have come to support and more are coming [Tuesday],” said Longworth. “Anyone in pink – that’s us.”

Their first-round highlights saw Longworth almost ace the par-3 17th where he enjoyed a tap-in birdie. Ciullo hitting the pin on the ninth and lipping out for eagle and Newman birdieing the first to get his round going . Between them they had five gross birdies.

A personal best from 14-year-old Mikey Nicholls helped his Somerset club to the top of the leaderboard.

The 18-handicapper from Worlebury had a gross score of nine-over 78 and earned 45 points.

He was supported by Dominic Williams, who scored 39, while their third team member Ryan Thrupp had 28.

The second and final round starts at 8am on Tuesday.
