Open finish highlight of top season

Regardless of his finish in this week’s Dubai World Championship, Simon Dyson can look back on the 2011 season as one of the most successful of his career.

He has enjoyed 21 finishes in the money, including eight in the top 10, from 28 events, leaving the Yorkshireman ninth in the European Tour money list with £1,238,944 to his name.

A spectacular July saw Dyson finish ninth in the Open Championship at Royal St George’s, by far his highest position in the prestigious major.

A fortnight later, he won the Irish Open by a shot from Richard Green and scooped a prize packet of 250,000 euros (£213,000).

When Dyson finished his round of 67, he was the co-leader with Green, who was one group behind him. Dyson had a putt at the 18th to go one clear but missed.

However, Green only found the front edge of the 18th green with his approach shot and took three putts to get down for his bogey.

In September, another win, his sixth career success on the European Tour, at the KLM Open in Holland earned Dyson 300,000 euros (£255,000) and moved him into the world’s top 30 for the first time.

Dyson finished third at the PGA Championship in June, and fifth places at the Sicilian Open and the Open de Espana, plus a ninth at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship have also helped him towards a possible top 10 money list finish.
