Westwood, 41, a veteran of nine Ryder Cups, said: “We’ve got ourselves into a good position, we had a great session.

“It was fun out there, we’re trying to have as much fun as we can out there.

“Jamie and I were pretty much smiling all the way around – when you play good golf it makes you happy.

“When you’ve played in a few (Ryder Cups) it’s fun to watch somebody who is making their debut take to it so well. I had no doubts that he would.”

Although the afternoon saw Westwood land his 22nd Ryder Cup point, the morning saw him sit out the action.

But he insisted it wasn’t a problem for him and he was happy to contribute in the second session.

“(It was) not tough at all,” he said. “Having a lie-in was a new thing for me, it was nice.

“We’ve got a really strong side of 12 and somebody is going to have to sit out. We tried to do our bit when called upon this afternoon.”
