Winner proves Law unto herself as Woodsome Hall’s Morris places second in English amateur

Morris produced some fine golf to aggregate 291 (71 72 72 76), but found herself 16 shots behind Bramall’s Bronte Law.

World No 3 amateur Law looked like retaining her title from the moment she fired an opening 63 and added rounds of 69 69 and 74 to confirm her victory.

Three other Yorkshire players had made it through the cut after two days, and the championship closed with two rounds on Thursday.

Ellie Goodall, of Selby, was tied 17th (72 78 74 78), Rotherham’s Olivia Winning shared 29th place (74 77 77 82) and Holly Morgan (Hallamshire) shot rounds of 71 76 86 and 80 to be equal 32nd.

Morris was out in level 37 in round three, with two birdies and two bogeys, and followed the same formula for an inward par run. In the afternoon she had five bogeys and just the one birdie.

Goodall found her three morning birdies overwhelmed by five bogeys, while in the final round she was level through nine holes, but dropped six shots on the way home.

Winning’s morning round suffered a disappointment on the penultimate hole, with a double bogey 6, and after going out in two over in the afternoon five shots got away from her grasp in successive holes from the 10th. She stopped the haemmoraghing by birdieing the 442-yard par-5 15th – a habit she indulged herself in during all four rounds – but the sweet taste was washed away with double bogeys at both 16 and 18.

Morgan had only six pars on her card in the morning and while she had birdies at the fourth and ninth they were accompanied by four double bogeys and one triple. In the afternoon she had half a dozen bogeys plus a double at the 12th.
