Yorkshire pair Brown and Fitzpatrick excel in English Boys’ Under-16 Championship

HALLAMSHIRE duo Barclay Brown and Alex Fitzpatrick both finished in the top five in the 72-hole English Boys’ Under-16 Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Wallassey.

Brown finished fourth following rounds of 71 77 71 and 69 with Fitzpatrick (69 77 77 66) one shot and one place back.

Rotherham’s Charles Daughtrey (73 77 72 79) was tied 22nd and Daniel Bradbury, of Wakefield, shared 27th place after scores of 76 72 78 and 76.

Brown had one birdie and 17 pars in his morning round on the final day, but in the afternoon went to the turn in three under with the aid of four birdies.

He made it five in eight holes by birdieing the 10th, but dropped a shot at the 16th on the way home.

Fitzpatrick had his second 77 on the bounce before closing with a sizzling 66. In the morning he endured a double bogey 5 at the par-3 143-yard 12th hole, but the afternoon saw just a single shot squandered, at the sixth.

He had three birdies on the way out and four on his inward nine, including three in a row from the 13th.

Daughtrey had three birdies in the morning, including at the consecutive par-5s, holes 13 and 14, but his afternoon round was marred by an inward 40 which included four dropped shots in three holes from the 14th.

Bradbury had no birdies but four bogeys and a double in his morning 78 then improved by two shots after lunch, despite further doubles at the eighth and 12th, birdies at five and six the highlight of the round.

Three players tied for first on 287 – Dunston Hall’s Toby Briggs, Ham Manor’s Charlie Strickland and Ignacio Puente, of Spain.
