Yorkshire quartet trail by just one shot after first round of Lee Westwood Trophy at Rotherham GC

A QUARTET of Yorkshire players is hot on the heels of Lee Westwood Trophy first-round leader Jason Stokes, of Jersey at Rotherham GC.

The La Moye GC player carded a four-under-par 66, one ahead of Martin Brown (Pike Hills), David Houlding (Moortown), Sam Haywood  (unattached) and Daniel Wasteney (Bondhay).

Rotherham’s Haywood, who turned professional and latterly became a European Tour caddie for players  including Sheffield’s Danny Willett, is playing in his first major competition since regaining  his amateur status last year.

The field play a further 18 holes on Wednesday with a cut then being made at the  leading 40 plus ties. 

The final day is Thursday when 36 holes will be played.
