Good day for French in Bramham opener

French rider Jean-Lou Bigot went into the lead after the first day of dressage at Bramham International Horse Trials yesterday.

Riding Lotus de Gobaude, the French team regular finished with 46.4 penalties in the senior CCI three star competition.

It turned out to be a good day for French horses as his countryman Eric Vigeanel was in third place riding Maranello (49.4 penalties).

British rider Ewart Woolley was second, riding Keep Your Options Open, on 47.9 with William Fox-Pitt, riding the French-bred horse Neuf des Coeurs, in fourth place.

Gary Parsonage from Beverley finished in 12th place with Fernhill O'Dea.

New Zealander Mark Todd was on top form to take the lead in the CCI three star dressage riding NZB Regent Lad, finishing on 41.3 penalties, as well as taking 10th place with Chuckleberry.

Second place went to British rider Laura Collett, the current Young Rider European champion, on Rayef (42.3) and Emily Baldwin was third with Drivetime ( 44.6).

Oliver Townend finished in the top 10 in 9th place with Imperial Master. The Huddersfield-born rider is only just back competing after a bad fall from Ashdale Cruise Master at Lexington, Kentucky.

Nicola Wilson, from Northallerton, rode Christopher Bartle's horse, Ballengland Rebel to 22nd place.
