Grundmanis boosts Steeldogs' options at the back

SHEFFIELD STEELDOGS will hope to climb out of the bottom two in the English Premier League when they follow up Saturday night's visit to Peterborough Phantoms by hosting 2009-10 regular season champions Milton Keynes at Ice Sheffield on Sunday (5.30pm).

Matt Darlow's side will be boosted by the arrival of new defenceman Kriss Grundmanis, who was released by Hull earlier this week.

The Latvian struggled to make his mark in the Elite League, posting one goal and one assist in 17 appearances.

Hull coach Sylvain Cloutier was keen for Grundmanis to be sorted out quickly with another club after deciding the 21-year-old was not quite ready for the UK's top flight.

The Sheffield club are also beleived to be close to landing a former Elite League forward with AHL experience.

Another player the Steeldogs have been talking to is Andre Payette, who spent five seasons in the EIHL. Four of those came at Newcastle although his most successful spell came in his debut season in the UK's top tier when he helped Coventry Blaze to the treble in 2004-05.

Last year Payette played under Tony Hand at Manchester Phoenix in the EPL, scoring 12 goals and 13 assists in 51 appearances.
