Harlequins v Leeds Carnegie: Frustration over our failures can prove healthy says Key

Guinness premiership: ANDY KEY says the hurt of Leeds Carnegie's last two defeats will help drive them to victory at Harlequins today.

The relegation-battlers have little margin for error in the final four games of the season, a scenario heightened by their failure to pick up a point at Gloucester two weeks ago and their inability to hammer home a winning advantage against Northampton seven days later.

Leeds visit Harlequins today with Key energised by his players' determination to atone for their errors.

"Every game we've played in recently we've felt we could have come away with a win or more points, and that's what is frustrating the players," said Key, who said his players were guilty of 'over trying' as they squandered a host of chances against Northampton.

"That's healthy and really good for the players. The more they feel they should have won, the more they put into the following week's training to make sure that the next week they put it right."

The director of rugby attributes Leeds's form since the turn of the year to the strength of the club's defence and their growing confidence with ball in hand.

"Our defence at times has been outstanding, what we are trying to do now is gel that with an attacking brand of rugby," he said.

"Our competitiveness, physicality and sheer desire in the contact area has allowed us to play and be competitive in a lot of games

"You don't adapt overnight and you have to give the players credit. We're in a relegation fight but we're also in the top four of the form table, which says a lot.

"It's about striking a balance between earning the right to attack and not putting yourself under unnecessary pressure. You are seeing a side that is balancing out."

Leeds also have to visit London Irish before entertaining bottom-club Worcester Warriors in a game Key is hoping will not prove to be as decisive as the table suggests.

Key said: "If we can win the next two games we put ourselves in a strong position where we don't even have to concern ourselves with the Worcester game.

"We'll take it one game at a time, and our focus is on Harlequins."

Calum Clark has been restored to the back row in place of Kearnan Myall while Andy Gomarsall returns to the Leeds bench.

Former Tykes scrum-half Danny Care will once again be Harlequins' No 9.

Leeds received a boost last night when Sale were beaten 30-19 at home by Saracens.

It means Leeds could draw level on points with one of their main relegation rivals if they win today.

Rotherham's survival in the Championship will be assured if they avoid defeat at Birmingham Solihull tomorrow.

Nick Buckley returns in the centres with back row Sam Dickinson on the bench.

If Doncaster fail to beat Exeter today they will need to win their final two games to stand any chance of progessing to the promotion play-off semi-finals.
