TOP sprinter Harry Angel heads the entries for tomorrow's Duke of York Stakes, the opening day highlight of the Dante festival on Knavesmire.

The Clive Cox-trained colt came to the fore when winning Newmarket’s July Cup at Newmarket and the Sprint Cup at Haydock last year.

Jockey Adam Kirby resumes his partnership on the Godolphin-owned dual Group One winner for a race that has attracted seven runners.

Harry Angel will carry a 5lb penalty for his past successes at Group 1 level though this does not perturb Lambourn-based Cox who views the race as a prep for the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot next month.

He said. “We had a tricky Spring and I think it’s fair to say this is a starting point. So I’d be pleased when he has got his first run under his belt.

“He is a once in a lifetime horse. He makes the heart race on every occasion you see him on the racetrack. It’s a dream to have a top-flight horse. Only last year he was the highest-rated six-furlong horse in the world.”

Archie Watson claimed a first juvenile winner of the season at Beverley last week and attempts to repeat the dose with Quiet Endeavour today.

Hopes are high of a strong show from the two-year-old, who is owned by the influential Ontoawinner racing syndicates.

Watson said: “He’s got plenty of boot and he works with a couple of two-year-olds who have already run well.

The trainer claimed a similar race at Beverley’s fixture on Bank Holiday Monday when Rockin Roy dazzled on his debut.

David O’Meara has entered Suedois in Saturday’s Lockinge Stakes at Newbury. Rivals to the Yorkshire challenger could include Addeybb who won the season-opening Lincoln Handicap at Doncaster for William Haggas.
