Huddersfield Town v Colchester United: Relaxed Town chief Hoyle hoping for bumper backing

League one: WATCHING Dean Hoyle during the final few minutes of last month's win for Huddersfield Town over Millwall was an exhausting experience.

The Terriers chairman seemed, to those of us sitting just a few yards away, a bundle of nerves as he paced up and down the back few steps of the directors' box.

Town, a goal ahead through Peter Clarke, were coming under heavy pressure from the Lions and Hoyle, when not glancing down anxiously at his watch, appeared to be kicking and heading every clearance.

With Huddersfield being so close to ending the season-long search for a win against a side in the top six, such a reaction was understandable from a man who has bankrolled the club via a host of ambitious signings since joining the board two years ago.

"I was very nervous near the end against Millwall," admits Hoyle ahead of today's final home game of the regular season. "Getting three points was so important to every Huddersfield fan, not just me. A few days earlier, we had been 3-2 down to Walsall late on and, basically, five minutes away from blowing our season.

"But after fighting back to beat Walsall, another win against Millwall would have meant we were almost there. That is why I was so nervous.

"Now we are definitely in the play-offs, I am looking forward to being able to relax against Colchester for probably the first time this season. I might feel differently once the game is underway, though."

Hoyle can relax today as Town prepare to host Aidy Boothroyd's men, but the same cannot be said of the home players.

Manager Lee Clark is determined to finish the regular season with a flourish and, hopefully, claim either a third or fourth-place finish to ensure Town are at home in the second leg of the play-off semi-finals.

With that in mind, Hoyle has slashed prices to 10 (adults) and 5 (concessions) in an attempt to attract a bumper crowd.

Huddersfield season-ticket holders have also been given the chance to switch seats to the end that is normally exclusively for visiting fans to ensure Clark's men will have support from all four sides of the stadium.

Hoyle said: "We would love to get a crowd of 18,000, which would be great for the players but also demonstrate to me just how worthwhile putting a bob or two into the club has been.

"It would be great to win our final two games. Confidence is high, especially after the way we beat Millwall a couple of weeks ago. Getting the monkey off our back about beating a team in the top six was important because it means people can stop talking about it.

"The most frustrating part for me before we beat Millwall was that we had deserved to beat teams in the top six on several occassions but never managed it. At Norwich, we were superb in the first half and could have been out of sight, and there were also a few other times when we were the better team."
