Having suffered a 5-2 defeat in Nottingham in the first leg on Saturday night, it was desperation time for Paul Thompson’s team back in front of their own fans.

Not surprisingly they came out of the blocks flying and dominated possession and chances, as the Panthers opted to try and hit on the break for a goal that would probably kill the tie off.

Robert Dowd, Colton Fretter all had half-chances but the clearest opportunity fell to Anders Franzon early on when his effort from close in cannoned off the side of the left-hand post.

At the other end, Eric Lindjagen missed the puck completely with the goal at his mercy from close-range, but Ervins Mustukovs remained largely untroubled during the opening 20 minutes.

It looked as though the Steelers pressure was going to be unrewarded as the clock ticked down toward the end of the first.

But persistence in front of the net from Levi Nelson eventually paid off when he forced the puck home past Panthers netminder Miika Wiikman at 18.33.
