Kear calls on fans to give golden glow to the Wildcats

WAKEFIELD Trinity Wildcats coach John Kear has urged the club's supporters to help give his side the edge required to inflict a surprise defeat on Super League leaders Wigan Warriors tomorrow.

Troubled Wakefield, who pushed champions Leeds hard last week before falling at the finish, have won just once since Good Friday and have subsequently slipped out of the top eight.

But they are launching an attempt to crank up the atmosphere at Hearwell Stadium tomorrow by offering cut-price tickets for just 10 (5 concessions) and promoting the contest as 'The Golden Game'.

Kear, who has allowed prop Kyle Bibb to join Whitehaven on loan, said: "If you ask any of the Wildcats players which are the occasions they remember most, it's when the fans are at their best; when the shouting for them is at its loudest and when all they can hear is the support coming from the terraces.

"It's that important to what happens and how they deal with what's being thrown at them by the opposition.

"Wigan is going to be a significant challenge for the Wildcat players who have their eyes firmly fixed on a top-eight finish so anything that can be done to provide them with an edge against the Warriors will be very useful.

"The match has been labelled as 'The Golden Game' in honour of the club's glorious past.

"I'd love it if the fans turned up in big numbers to share that experience and give the team that leg up which could prove the difference."

Former Wakefield and Great Britain centre Ian Brooke will lead the side out tomorrow while Wigan legend Billy Boston – a member of rugby league's Hall of Fame – will do likewise for the visitors as part of the West Yorkshire club's plans to celebrate their illustrious history.

Bradford Bulls' have suffered their own dip in form and need a positive result at Wrexham to avoid a fourth successive defeat.

They lost against the Crusaders 19-0 in Edinburgh but should have England international Jamie Langley and Brett Kearney back from injury while prop Steve Crossley, 19, is set for his Super League debut in the absence of captain Andy Lynch.

Conversely, Leeds are on a six-match winning run but that will come under considerable threat this evening when, without eight regulars, they head to a Harlequins side who have pulled clear of the foot of the table with four wins in five games.
