Despite a stuttering start by the Steelers, the 26-year-old Canadian has been one of the positives so far this season, scoring eight goals - the most in the league - and two assists in six games.

But Lacroix was forced to undergo surgery on two fractures to his ankle following an injury he picked up in Saturday’s 7-3 reverse in the Challenge Cup at arch-rivals Nottingham Panthers.

Christiansen had suggested following Sunday night’s 5-4 league defeat to Braehead Clan that he would be turning to the marketplace to bring in new faces, with the news about Lacroix hastening that need.

“Losing Max Lacroix for a minimum of three months is a big blow to our team,” said Christiansen.

“He was leading the league in goals when he got hurt and was really emerging into the player we expected him to be.

“He has had successful surgery on Monday and is still in the hospital recovering.

“I am currently looking for a replacement for Max and there are a number of players on the market - but it is important that we sign a player who is capable of helping us offensively.”

The Steelers are back in action on Saturday when they travel to South Wales to take on the Cardiff Devils in the Challenge Cup.

The two meet again in South Yorkshire on Sunday night in another Group B qualification game (5pm).
