Last opportunity for Dyson to capitalise on his major tickets

VICTORY at St Andrews last year in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship was Simon Dyson's meal ticket to the majors.

The biggest win of his career elevated him into the top 50 in the world and gained him exemption into all of the following season's majors for the first time.

However, the 32-year-old from Malton will be justified in feeling he has not yet cashed in that ticket. His record in the majors this year reads: missed cut, missed cut, 48th, although on both ocassions that he failed to reach the weekend – on his Masters debut and at the US Open – he missed out by only a couple of shots.

From a career-high world ranking of 43rd after that victory at the 'Home of Golf' last October, Dyson has dropped to 84th, and after finishing eighth on the Order of Merit last year he is 81st and some way off reaching the top 60 and qualifying for the season-ending Dubai World Championship.

Fellow Yorkshire golfers Danny Willett (Rotherham) and Hull's Richard Finch are 33rd and 51st, respectively.

Dyson remains confident that his A-game is not far away, and at the Open at St Andrews he showed flashes of his best and was encouraged by the way he was striking the ball.

It was in the US PGA Championship that he made his biggest impression on the world stage to date. Three years ago at Southern Hills, Tulsa, he stormed through the field with a closing 64 to finish in a tie for sixth, the highest-placed European.

Dyson is also on the fringes of the Ryder Cup race and a similar finish at Whistling Straits this week would see him back in contention for one of the nine automatic qualifying places on Colin Montgomerie's team for the October match, with just the Czech Open and Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles remaining after this week as counting events.

Convincing Montgomerie he is worthy of a wild-card pick may be a stretch considering the quality of players already vying for the captain's attentions.

But Dyson tees off at the PGA this week knowing he can still make an impact in 2010.
