Last remaining GB duo into last eight

BADMINTON: Britain’s Chris Adcock and Imogen Bankier defied the rankings again to power into the quarter-finals at the World Championships.

The Anglo-Scottish duo, the UK’s last representatives at Wembley Arena this week, beat seeded opposition for the second successive day as they came from behind against Japan’s Shintaro Ikeda and Reiko Shiota.

Adcock and Bankier, ranked 20, lost an error-ridden first game to the 15th seeds but recovered well to level in the second and then dominated the last to claim a 17-21 21-15 21-16 win.

Reaching the last eight is a career best for both players, who are now guaranteed good ranking points and a huge lift to their Olympic qualifying prospects.

Leicester-born Adcock, 22, said: “I tensed up quite a lot but ‘Imo’ calmed me down, telling me it was like practice, just one more point. It worked very well.”

It was later confirmed Adcock and Bankier would face fourth seeds Tao Jiaming and Qing Tian of China after a three-game victory over Poland’s Robert Mateusiak and Nadiezda Zieba.
