London 2012: Day Eight - treble glory for Yorkshire as Ennis, Triggs Hodge and Copeland triumph

Ennis, 26, won the Olympic heptathlon to claim the gold medal in sensational fashion.

She jumped 6m48 in the long jump and set a personal best in the javelin before completing her Olympic destiny in the 800m.

Yorkshire won two gold medals in 20 minutes on the water at Eton Dorney.

Hebden rower Hodge and the men’s four continued Britain’s strong tradition in the men’s four by defending the title they won in Beijing.

Hodge, 33, the stroke of the boat, controlled the race all the way as the home crew kept their rivals the Australians at arms length.

Hodge then walked to the mixed zone and roared: “Bringing it back to Yorkshire.”

Katherine Copeland was overcome with emotion as she struggled to comprehend her achievement as she and Sophie Hosking then won gold in the lightweight double sculls.

The 21-year-old was a world juinor champion last year, and is now an Olympic champion.

“It’s unbelievable,” she said. “I wish I’d have known this would happen a couple of months ago when we were having such a stress. If I’d have known three years ago.

“We see poeple win gold medals and I really don’t see myself as any of those people.

“All my friends are watching in Middlesbrough on a big screen. Thank you all for the messages, they were amazing.”

Middlesbrough’s Chris Tomlinson competes in the long jump final while Mo Farah looks for the first gold of an Olympic double in the 10,000 metres.

Olympic team pursuit champion Ed Clancy is fourth after day one of the multi-displine omnium with three more events to go tomorrow.

He won the opening time trial to lead the omnium but finished 11th and then fifth in the elimination to sit fourth overall.
