Longton 21 Sheffield Tigers 22 - Outram kick decisive as Tigers leave it late

SHEFFIELD Tigers clinched a tight victory at Stoke rivals Longton to maintain their climb up the Midlands table.

Trailing at half-time, Tigers fought back after the break, but were still 21-10 down with 15 minutes remaining until two late tries helped them to victory.

Prop Tom Lockwood opened the South Yorkshire side's account with a try after just seven minutes and centre Tom Outram kicked the conversion.

Longton hit back with an unconverted try but Outram added a penalty to put Tigers

10-5 ahead. However, a penalty from Longton and a second unconverted try put them 13-10 ahead at the break.

With John Buchanan in the sin-bin, Tigers struggled to cope and conceded a third try to go 18-10 behind but the conversion was missed once again.

When they returned to full strength, Sheffield hit back with some tough tackling.

Then full-back Jon Feeley touched down and, after a kick had been charged down, replacement flanker Callum McKenzie raced in for their third try, Outram adding the extras to give Tigers their narrow win.

Penrith 29 Sandal 17

A much-changed Sandal came off second best at Penrith despite taking an early lead.

Although the home side dominated the first 15 minutes, Sandal went ahead when a chip fell perfectly for centre Danny Mitchell to collect and run home from 30 metres. Full-back Tom Hodson added the conversion.

Penrith hit back with an unconverted try but Sandal made it 10-5 with a penalty from Hodson.

Super Sandal defence repelled the hosts until Penrith grabbed a converted try to take a two-point advantage into the second half.

There was a lengthy break in play early in the second half when a home player was taken to hospital with an injury, but his side responded and ran in three unanswered tries to lead 29-10.

Sandal hit back with a second converted try from Mitchell towards the end.
