Maximum haul sees Steelers close the gap

A 6-0 thrashing of bottom club Dundee Stars was followed by a much tougher encounter at Edinburgh Capitals last night, with Gerad Adams’s side needing overtime to edge past their second-bottom hosts 3-2.

Gord Baldwin scored the 62nd-minute winner for Steelers at Murrayfield, after first period strikes from Mike Forney and Robert Dowd had been cancelled out by replies in the third from Rene Jarolin and Greg Collins.

On Saturday, Steelers were out of sight after the first 20 minutes with goals from Tomas Petruska, Darrell Hay and Forney.

Further strikes followed from Colton Fretter (2) and Petruska.

Steelers are now just three points behind Elite League leaders Braehead Clan with two games in hand.

What seems like a head-to-head battle between Hull Stingrays and Fife Flyers for sixth spot continued, with the Scottish club winning 4-3 on a penalty shoot-out in East Yorkshire last night.

It increased the gap between Fife and seventh-placed Hull to five points, although player-coach Omar Pacha’s team do have four games in hand on their Scottish rivals.

It was still a positive couple of days for Hull, however, ending with three points from their two games following a terrific 3-2 road win at league leaders Braehead.

After goals from Matt Keith and Stefan Meyer had put Clan 2-0 ahead inside the first 10 minutes, Hull were soon back in the game after Jordan Knox’s 14th-minute strike.

That was how it stayed until 44.15 when Jordan Mayer levelled, with Zach Hervato scoring the game-winning goal at 54.36.
