Mount Logan’s profile fits for tilt at November Handicap

Mount Logan can add a dash of quality to the final day of the Flat season at Doncaster by winning the Betfred November Handicap.

Punters face an almighty conundrum when attempting to solve this 23-runner affair, but Luca Cumani’s colt could be the proverbial Group horse masquerading as a handicapper.

The son of New Approach appears to have been preserved especially for this race after he fairly dotted up over course and distance in September.

Mount Logan was the only three-year-old in the line-up, but he made short work of sharp rivals like Forgotten Hero and Bold Sniper, eventually winning by two and a quarter lengths.

Cumani’s representative is 7lb higher for this assignment, but he still has the right profile for a race in which his age bracket has a fairly good record and has assistance from man of the moment Andrea Atzeni in the saddle.

Things finally came together for Jamaican Bolt at Doncaster last month, with Geoff Oldroyd’s charge and William Buick fancied to double up in the Betfred Supporting Jack Berry House Handicap.

The six-year-old son of Pivotal is not a straightforward customer as he is often at his best under death-or-glory tactics from off the pace.

This trait has arguably cost him more victories in his career, but Buick timed things beautifully in a six-furlong handicap a fortnight ago.

Jamaican Bolt was slightly more forceful than on recent efforts and responded manfully to pull three-quarters of a length clear of subsequent winner Red Pike.

Buick’s companion only really got going late on so it is entirely plausible that this seven-furlong trip could now be the way to go.

Melrose Abbey can claim a nice bit of black type by winning the Betfred TV EBF Stallions Breeding Winners Gillies Fillies’ Stakes.

Ralph Beckett’s runaway Newmarket scorer found the extended mile-and-three-quarter trip a bridge too far in the Park Hill Stakes at Doncaster in September, but this looks much more her bag.

Lady Luck can finally shine upon Tropics in the Betfred “Goals Galore” Wentworth Stakes.

Despite having won a Listed race at Newmarket in the summer, the July Cup runner-up has not had the rub of the green this term.

Nowhere was this better illustrated than on his penultimate visit to Ascot when he encountered severe traffic problems before flashing home for fourth spot in the Bengough Stakes.

Tropics was then beaten fair and square by Gordon Lord Byron, but trainer Dean Ivory was rightly thrilled by his superb second-placed finish in the British Champions Sprint Stakes.

The six-year-old is clearly adept when the mud is flying, but he is equally proficient on a sounder surface and can uphold Ascot form with Jack Dexter, who won the race last year.

Standing Ovation has an awful lot going for him in the Badger Ales Trophy at Wincanton. David Pipe’s seven-year-old is unbeaten in three tries at the Somerset venue, most revealingly when he claimed this race 12 months ago by five lengths. Standing Ovation is much higher in the weights for his repeat bid.
