Mr Lupton could head for Ascot

Already the winner of a valuable sales race at Doncaster and runner-up in Redcar’s Two-Year-Old Trophy, he added another hefty chunk of prize-money to his column.

He could be in line for further riches, too, for if he makes the cut he will take his chance in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot on Saturday, according to trainer Richard Fahey.

At halfway the favourite Udontdodou – trained by Richard Guest – looked to be travelling strongly, but it soon became apparent he was on the wrong part of the track with Dancing Star hitting the front.

Andrew Balding’s filly shot clear and looked to have it in the bag, but Spencer had conjured up a brilliant turn of foot from the Elnadim gelding, and won going away on the 10-1 chance.

“He’s a grand horse, he just didn’t handle the track at Newmarket last time. We thought getting him back on a flat track would be a big advantage to him,” said Spencer.

“It was a deep race, we probably had a bit of an advantage being drawn where we were, but at the end of the day he’s carried 9st 7lb against unexposed horses.”

Fahey said: “If he’s okay and he gets in he’ll go for the Wokingham.”

The Malton handler then teamed up with his old ally Paul Hanagan to win the Reg Griffin Appreciation Maiden with the promising Marie Of Lyon.

The day began with Snonao giving Emily Easterby her first winner in the saddle when lifting the Queen Mother’s Cup at York.

Riding for her father Tim, who trains at Great Habton, she got the best out of the four-year-old to win her weight in champagne courtesy of success in the mile-and-a-half handicap for lady amateurs. The horse is likely to be entered in August’s Ebor handicap.

“I enjoy riding as an amateur, but I don’t think I’ll turn pro,” said the winning rider whose grandfather, Peter, trained five Champion Hurdle winners.

Meanwhile Stillington trainer Rith Stillington won the concluding charity race on Dubai Dynamo, taking the amount raised for the Macmillan cancer charity to £450,000 on the day. More than £7m has been raised since the event’s inception in 1971.

Meadway made all the running to win the William Hill Scottish Tartan Trophy at Musselburgh for Hambleton trainer Bryan Smart.

More significantly, it was the highest profile win of jockey Connor Beasley’s comeback since the rider suffered life-threatening injuries in a fall at Wolverhampton last summer.

Meanwhile the feature £100,000 William Hill Scottish Sprint Cup went to Hoofalong for Ryedale trainer Mick Easterby – great uncle to the aforementioned Emily. The horse, owned by golfer Lee Westwood and his agent Chubby Chandler, was ridden by Nathan Evans.

Easton Angel turned on the heat with a sizzling success in the BetStars.uk Scurry Stakes at Sandown under Boroughbridge jockey Paul Mulrennan that marked her as one of the fastest sprinters in training.

Watched by trainer Michael Dods, she produced finishing power that left her rivals toiling in the final furlong.

The win – and rain in the South – bodes well for stablemate Mecca’s Angel. Winner of York’s Nunthorpe Stakes last August, she reappears in tomorrow’s King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot and underfoot conditions should be perfect.
