Murray into last eight after remarkable comeback

ANDY Murray completed a remarkable fightback to defeat Viktor Troicki 4-6 4-6 6-3 6-2 7-5 in the fourth round of the French Open.

Despite struggling with an ankle injury sustained in the previous round, Murray won the fifth set 7-5 to secure his place in the quarter-finals.

The Scot’s opponent looked on course for victory in the deciding set, leading 5-2 and impressing with some strong defensive work.

But Murray staged a dramatic comeback winning four straight games to take the lead before capitalising on a number of unforced errors from Troicki in the final game.

The Serbian managed to save three match points but Murray persisted and followed a big serve with a stunning backhand winner to seal his progress.

It was the second time in the match that Murray had to stage a comeback as a run of four disappointing games allowed Troicki to come from behind and win the second set yesterday.

The 15th seed Troicki again went ahead in the third set but Murray fought back despite requiring treatment on his strapped right ankle midway through the fourth.

Murray shrugged off the injury to secure the fourth set leaving the tie level at 2-2 as the day came to an end.

The Scot again did it the hard way in today’s one-set shoot-out as he fell behind to his opponent and was just two points from defeat as Troicki went 30-0 serving at 5-3.

Murray squandered two break points at 5-5 but a weak backhand into the net from the Serb gave him the advantage for the first time in the set.

The fourth seed let a 40-0 lead slip back to deuce but secured the hard-fought victory after taking his fourth match point.

Murray will now face the unseeded Juan Ignacio Chela in the last eight tomorrow.

He defeated the Argentine 2-6, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, 9-7 in the second round of the tournament last year.
