Nationalism has the right profile

William Buick is hoping Nationalism lives up to the hype of being compared to Halling in the totesport.com Cambridgeshire at Newmarket today.

Halling gave trainer John Gosden his first triumph in the nine-furlong handicap in 1994 on the way to becoming a Group One winner – with his name etched twice on York's Juddmonte International roll of honour.

Buick accepts Nationalism has the right profile leading up to the race, but believes the colt is a skinny price for such a hot race on what will be only his fifth career start.

"I think everyone thinks he is Halling in disguise, as he's a pretty short price for a race like this," said Buick, who claimed his first Classic win on Arctic Cosmos in the St Leger at Doncaster.

"He's a nice horse who goes in with an ideal profile and has done nothing wrong.

"Hopefully, he can win a race like this. He's by Pivotal, so should appreciate the ground."

Gosden, who has also won the Cambridgeshire with Pipedreamer in 2007 and Tazeez a year later, has two other runners, Taqleed and High Twelve.

Buick, who partnered 6-5 favourite Dream Ahead in providing trainer David Simcock with his first British Group One in the Shadwell Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket yesterday, believes Taqleed, unbeaten in two starts this season, could be a big threat to his stablemate.

"I've ridden Taqleed before. He will like the ground and is progressive. He's the danger," added Buick, who grabbed another winner yesterday as Myplacelater (3-1) took advantage in a non-runner-hit Aqlaam Godolphin Stakes.

Buick will pack his bags for France after Newmarket as he bids to cap a dream first season as stable jockey to Gosden when he takes the ride on Prix Foy winner Duncan in tomorrow's Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

He said: "I hope he runs well. It's an open race but a tough race, with 20-odd runners in it. I wouldn't be surprised if he finished in the first five and I'd be pleased with that."

Christophe Lemaire is in bullish mood as he prepares to bid for a first Arc victory on ante-post favourite Behkabad, who has won the Grand Prix de Paris and the Prix Niel on his last couple of starts.

His jockey said: "I'm very confident and I think the horse will be 100 per cent fit. We have a good draw in stall nine and his prep race was very good. I tried to make sure I did not give him a hard race and he won in good style.

"To win it would be a great, great pleasure for me. I'm happy to have a good horse to ride this year and this gives me more confidence and more excitement."

A total of 20 runners are set to go to post and Aidan O'Brien's main hope, Fame And Glory, is drawn right on the rail in stall one.

His big-race jockey, Johnny Murtagh, tasted Arc glory on Sinndar in 2000 and is excited about his chances this time around.

"He's in good form. Seamus (Heffernan) rode him the other morning and told me he was very happy with him," said Murtagh. "This has been his main target all year. He ran in the race last year (sixth) and it was great everyone decided to keep him in training and target Longchamp again.

"He's definitely strengthened up a lot since last year and he's a different horse now."

O'Brien also saddles Midas Touch and Irish Champion Stakes hero Cape Blanco, who has landed the Irish Derby and Irish Champion Stakes since beating Workforce in the Dante on Knavesmire in May.

Connections of Workforce are upbeat about a much-improved performance from their Epsom hero, who will be having his first run since beating just one home in the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes in July.Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to owner Khalid Abdullah, said: "Sir Michael (Stoute) seems very positive about the horse and is very pleased the way he's come on since the King George."
