One last Olympian effort to cap a summer of Glory for Hannon’s colt

IT is apt that Richard Hannon’s Olympic Glory could bid for more Group One honours in the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster later this month.

In a sporting year that will be forever remembered for Team GB’s iconic Olympians and Paralympians, Olympic Glory is a horse of the very highest of potential.

The Richard Hannon-trained two-year-old has won four of his five starts – the colt’s most recent victory came in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at Longchamp on Sunday and his only defeat was at the hands of Jim Bolger’s potential champion Dawn Approach in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Hannon, whose resurgence has left Richard Hughes on the brink of a first jockeys’ championship, could also run Havana Gold and Montiridge.

Aidan O’Brien has 13 entries following the latest declarations, though ante-post Derby favourite Mars is a notable absentee. Battle Of Marengo arguably has the strongest form claims of the Ballydoyle contingent at this stage.

Thirty-five horses remain in contention, with John Gosden’s Ashdan, York winner Dundonnell and Mark Johnston’s Steeler three eye-catching entries.

Meanwhile, Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe heroine Solemia could bring down the curtain on her racing career with one final run in the Far East.

However trainer Carlos Laffon-Parias, and the Wertheimer brothers who own Solemia, have decided against a trip to America for the Breeders’ Cup, saying the filly needs more time to recover from Sunday’s gruelling race.

Solemia will be retired to stud at the end of the year

Meanwhile Frankel, the world’s best racehorse, looked in fine fettle during an early morning racecourse gallop at Newmarket yesterday.

Sir Henry Cecil’s colt, who is very likely to round off his incredible and so-far unbeaten career in the Qipco Champion Stakes at Ascot on Saturday week, was partnered by his usual work rider Shane Featherstonhaugh.

“This was more informal – he only had one lead horse this time – but he came away nicely clear as he always does,” said Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to owner Prince Khalid Abdullah.

In other racing news, Bronze Angel could step out of handicap company in the Darley Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday. Marcus Tregoning’s rapidly-improving three-year-old won at Doncaster earlier in the year before landing the Betfred Cambridgeshire under William Buick.

Bronze Angel’s regular rider Hayley Turner will resume her partnership with the colt, having missed his Cambridgeshire victory due to riding commitments in America.

Tomorrow’s fixture at Newton Abbot has been abandoned due to a waterlogged track.
