Opportunity to win your own race

ANOTHER memorable Flat season is coming to an end and it is time once again for racing enthusiasts in the region to look back on the races, great and small, and come up with their idea of Yorkshire's Racehorse of the Year for 2010.

It could be the winner of a Group 1 contest on Knavesmire or Town Moor or it could be a multiple winner for one of Yorkshire's smaller stables; Richard Fahey, David Nicholls and Mark Johnston have their admirers but so do Robin Bastiman, David Barron and Richard Whitaker.

The award is open to any Yorkshire-trained horse to have impressed during the year or to any animal from outside the region to have made an impact on one of Yorkshire's nine racecourses.

When you have made your choice, fill in the coupon alongside this article and you could win a once-in-a-lifetime prize courtesy of Go Racing in Yorkshire, the marketing body representing the region racecourses and SkyBet, the Yorkshire-based bookmakers.

The Yorkshire Racehorse of the Year will be selected by a panel of Yorkshire racing journalists and the names of readers whose choice matches theirs will be placed into a hat with the winner drawn at random.

For the lucky winner, the first part of the prize will be an invitation for two to the prestigious Go Racing in Yorkshire annual awards lunch, sponsored by SkyBet, which is this year being held at York racecourse on Thursday, November 25.

He or she will also have a race run in their name on a Yorkshire course during 2011 with lunch for two before racing and the opportunity to present the trophies to winning connections afterwards as well as having a free 50 bet courtesy of SkyBet.

So if you were sufficiently impressed in May by Rip Van Winkle, trained at Ballydoyle by Aidan O'Brien in winning the Juddmonte International at York – the richest race held on the course – or by Arctic Cosmos, the John Gosden-trained winner of the world's oldest Classic, the Ladbrokes St Leger run at Doncaster in September, then make one of them your choice.

Alternately, you might go for the Henry Cecil-trained Midday, winner of the Darley Yorkshire Oaks in August and subsequently the Group 1 Prix de Vermeille at Longchamp or, if you are one for outsiders, your selection might be Sole Power, trained in Co Meath by Edward Lynam, the 100-1 winner of the Group 1 Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes at York.

The closing date for entries is Saturday, November 6 and the winner will be announced in the Yorkshire Post on November 13.

Other claimants to the title include:

Borderlescott (trained at Cowthorpe by Robin Bastiman) – the winner of this award for the last two years – won King George Stakes (Group 2) at Glorious Goodwood and was placed in both the Palace House Stakes (Group 2) at Newmarket and the King's Stand Stakes (Group 1) at Royal Ascot.
