Californian Jeremy Hemsley adjusting to life with Sheffield Sharks

Jeremy Hemsley has a reputation for being the quiet man of the Sheffield Sharks locker room. He is also not afraid to speak up when he feels the blame lies with him.

That is exactly what he did on Sunday afternoon following the Sharks’ 107-93 defeat to the BBL-leading Leicester Riders.

It was a committed performance from Atiba Lyons’ side, but the 21-point deficit they faced midway through the second quarter was a responsibility their 24-year-old point guard from California was determined to shoulder.

“Coach (Lyons) talked a lot about us not getting back on our jumpers, that they would be able to run out on us a lot,” said Hemsley. “It was on me really, not getting back to help our guys. There were a lot of defensive lapses but I take the blame for that.

“I don’t think I really did all that I could. I know what I had to do, we watched the film and coach showed me I’ve got to get back.

“And I didn’t do that, so I let my team down in that regards.”

On the offensive side of the court he certainly let no one down, contributing 21 points, second only to Antwon Lillard (23).

Hemsley is still bedding into the BBL having joined Sheffield in the second week of the season following a year out from the game.

He graduated San Diego State in May 2019 and was set to showcase his skills in the NBA’s developmental G-league but was sent home because of an administration error on his medical form.

Hemsley spent a year in the gym keeping his body in shape, waiting for a chance like the one Sheffield presented him with.

“I’m still getting used to playing having not played for a year, so I think I’m just relearning a lot and unlearning a lot of bad habits. I’m happy to be here and just doing what I love to do. We’re lucky to do it in a pandemic,” he said.

“It’s a real slow pace in Sheffield, especially coming from California, there’s a lot going on out there. I even don’t mind the weather here, getting bundled up, staying warm.”
