Otley 22 London Scottish 34: Clipping wings costs Otley

Otley were the architects of their own destruction, constantly attempting to drive through the middle and neglecting their lethal wingers.

Twice James Twomey was given the ball and he duly obliged with super tries.

On the opposite flank, Curtis Wilson got clear on his one opportunity only to be pulled back for a forward pass, a contentious decision as a try then would have levelled the scores late in the game.

The Scottish pack were a deciding factor, three times driving over for tries, starting in the first minute after Otley were penalised for crossing when running back the kick-off. The kick went into the corner where No 7 Ben Lonergan finished off.

Otley replied with a penalty from Jervis Manupenu, moved to centre, and they went ahead when, after charging down a clearing kick, they retrieved the ball to feed Twomey, who ran past his opposite number to get in at the corner.

The Exiles were then allowed to catch their re-start on the full, move the ball out to winger David Howells, who strode over, fly-half James Brown converting.

Otley, with scrum-half Stephen Depledge prompting well, were buzzing but Manupenu failed with a penalty before Scottish mauled their way over, No 6 William Lipp grounding.

On 40 minutes Lonergan added his second and both tries were converted by Brown.

With Scottish prop Matthew Johnson in the sin-bin, Otley drove over at a scrum, Oli Stedman touching down for Manupenu to convert but Brown replied with a penalty.

Then came Twomey's second try, converted by Manupenu and Otley looked as if they could win only for Scottish replacement Adam Kwasnicki to be driven over in the 80th minute.
