Panthers gain revenge in Sheffield

NOTTINGHAM PANTHERS gained swift revenge over arch-rivals Sheffield Steelers with a 5-2 Challenge Cup win at Sheffield Arena.

Steelers had won the two previous meetings between the sides at Nottingham's National Ice Centre, including Wednesday night's 3-1 victory in the Cup.

But despite twice taking the lead, the momentum was firmly with Corey Neilson's side as they were able to shut down the Steelers' usually effective powerplay unit each time it took to the ice, while scoring two of their goals with the man advantage.

Robert Dowd gave Steelers an early lead in the sixth minute before Billy Ryan levelled just under four minutes later. Jeff Legue's go-ahead strike for the home side at 13.03 was then cancelled out by David Clarke's powerplay goal 10 minutes later.

Ryan and then David Beauregard struck further second period goals for Nottingham within the space of four minutes before Matt Myers' short-handed effort at 43.39 wrapped up the scoring.

Steelers remain top of Group B despite the setback, although Nottingham are now only four points behind with four games in hand.

Cardiff can lepfrog Steelers into top spot if they beat Hull Stingrays in South Wales on Saturday night. Steelers' one remaining Cup match is at Hull on Saturday, November 6.

Ben Simon's team now head north of the border for a double-header against Edinburgh Capitals before welcoming the Scottish strugglers to South Yorkshire next Wednesday.
