Paul Hanagan exclusive column: Crownthorpe is my pick for Redcar

The boundaries of Yorkshire racing are stretched tomorrow to incorporate Redcar's biggest day, with the Musley Bank stable targeting the Two-Year-Old Trophy big time.

Richard Fahey saddles over a third of the field with eight runners in the six-furlong, Listed contest – a couple of them having run in the Goffs Premier Yearling Stakes at the Welcome To Yorkshire Ebor Festival.

My mount in tomorrow’s renewal is Crownthorpe, my choice to give me a first win in the race, so it will be my fault if things don’t go our way.

Crownthorpe is second bottom weight and comes out of stall 19. This is not the greatest draw, but then the field often comes down the middle of the track.

The Pattern race action is courtesy of the Listed Guisborough Stakes where I ride Stamp Hill. The way he won the International Stakes at Ascot in July suggests he is a strong contender.

Coincidentally, Ascot is where I am riding this afternoon and The Feathered Nest offers me my best chance of a winner.

Ardent York racegoers might recall her debut a year ago when she ran into a place and she filled third spot again on Knavesmire this June.

A win last time out at Newmarket showed her quality, so the 3.10pm today is a real opportunity.

Although he hasn’t won for a couple of years, Heaven’s Guest will be hoping it’s a case of “horse for courses”.

Now aged seven, he’s almost part of the family at Musley Bank. He has won twice at the Berkshire track in the past and ran well there just last month, into third place.

Reviewing last weekend’s action, we’re still scratching our heads over the disappointing run of Sands Of Mali when he was beaten in the Group One Juddmonte Middle Park.

Having been such an impressive winner of the Group Two Al Basti Equiworld Gimcrack at York, we had hoped for much better and an explanation is yet to come to light.

I was much happier with Queen Kindly – winner of the 2016 Sky Bet Lowther at York – who finished a creditable fifth in the Prix de l’Abbaye at Chantilly on Sunday.

It was a contest in which York form was prominent, with Coolmore Nunthorpe fourth Battaash getting revenge on his Knavesmire Group One conqueror Marsha, who took the silver, outside Paris.

And what a performance it was by Enable to win the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe under Frankie Dettori.

Owned by Prince Khalid Abdulla, the superstar filly had collected leg four of her now five-in- a-row Group Ones in the Darley Yorkshire Oaks.

Visitors to the Welcome To Yorkshire Ebor Festival in the summer certainly witnessed some great horses and can look forward to more of the same on both Friday and Saturday, October 13-14 as the Knavesmire season reaches its conclusion.

The final racing at York in 2017 is on Friday and Saturday, October 13-14.

It’s Countryside Day on the Friday with a market, while the Saturday features the Coral Sprint Trophy.
