Paul Hanagan: Interesting series of rides will hopefully maintain Chester record

IT’S been a great week for winners so far, starting off on Knavesmire last Sunday. Then I enjoyed a four-timer at Carlisle Racecourse on Wednesday, which included Ventura Spirit who has been a regular around York Racecourse this season.

I’m hoping that my good run continues over the next couple of days which will see me on Town Moor this afternoon and on Wolverhampton’s all-weather surface this evening. Then, tomorrow, I’m off to the Roodee at Chester where I have some really interesting rides.

By the end of Wednesday, I led Kieren Fallon – my nearest challenger in the jockeys’ championship – by 17 winners. It would be excellent to add to that cushion over coming days.

I think my best chance this afternoon is my final ride of seven at the St Leger meeting. That is on Motrice in the Group 2 Doncaster Cup at 2.25pm.

Trained by Sir Mark Prescott at Newmarket, she won a Listed race late last month at Goodwood. I think she could have a decent opportunity to follow up.

I have half-a-dozen rides at Wolverhampton Racecourse late this afternoon and this evening.

The principal reason that I’m heading to the Black Country is to get on board Quails Hollow in the handicap race at 6.10pm.

I won on the gelding in the fifth race of his career – his first victory – at Hamilton Park just over a fortnight ago. He’s trained by Yorkshireman-in-exile William Haggas, and faces just four rivals tomorrow. The only threat to him, I believe, is All My Heart.

I have a good record at Chester Races this season, winning six times from 18 rides. I hope to maintain that sequence tomorrow afternoon.

I have a fascinating ride on board Debussy for Godolphin in the Listed race at 3.30pm.

This horse ran well at York before winning the Arlington Million in the United States in 2010, was placed in last autumn’s Champion Stakes at Newmarket and wasn’t disgraced in the Breeders’ Cup turf at Churchill Downs in Kentucky a few weeks later.

However, this season has been a different story and he hasn’t reproduced that brilliant form in top-class company in Dubai and at Ascot.

The training yard is now hoping that he can rediscover his winning ways, and I am delighted to have been chosen for the ride at Chester.

Possibly my best chance at the Roodee is on Place In My Heart in the 4.10pm nursery race.

Last month the filly won at Yarmouth Racecourse on only her second outing, following a debut runner-up spot at Chepstow.

The boss Richard Fahey has allowed me off one of his stable’s runners so that I can ride the filly. Richard is very good like that.

Another horse that I would quite fancy is Ted’s Brother in the seven-furlong handicap race at 5.15pm.

He’s won his last two races, including one for me a fortnight ago at Newcastle Racecourse. He was a little reluctant when he hit the front that day, so my riding tactics will need to be spot on tomorrow. I think he is in with a good chance of completing a hat-trick of wins.

She’s Got The Luck was another recent winner for me – this time at Ayr. She was hanging on a bit at the end of that race though. She would have a little bit of a squeak in the closing race at Chester tomorrow which is at 5.50pm.

Tomorrow afternoon will be an interesting one for me. It would be great to put one or two more winners on the board – and that would complete an excellent week.
