Phillips switches to Toledo

FORMER Hull Stingrays defenceman Dave Phillips has been signed as a free agent by Toledo Walleye in the ECHL.

Phillips, from Hull, made history last year when he became the first British-trained defenceman to play in the American Hockey League with the Rockford IceHogs, affiliate to this year's 2010 Stanley Cup winners, the Chicago Blackhawks.

He went on to record six assists in 52 games and ended the season with a +/- rating of +14, the second highest on the roster.

A move followed to the more prosperous Chicago Wolves in the summer but, having failed to make an impact, Phillips was assigned to Toledo by the AHL title hopefuls on October 28.

Since then, Phillips - who spent five years in Hull before spending a season with the Belfast Giants - has gone on to play 19 games, picking up six assists and +/- of +2, also accumulating 10 penalty minutes.

Toledo announced on Boxing Day that they had signed the 23-year-old Yorkshireman as a free agent after the Wolves had released Phillips from his contract.
